What is a VIN Verification?
A VIN verification is a physical inspection to ensure that the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the car matches the ownership documents. In California, this is documented on DMV Form REG 31.
Note: This is not a safety inspection or a smog check. It is purely to confirm the identity of the vehicle and its emission labels.
What We Look For (Checklist)
Public VIN
Usually visible through the windshield on the dashboard.
Federal Safety Label
Located on the driver's side door jamb (B-Pillar).
Emission Label
Under the hood. Confirms EPA/California standards.
Odometer
We must record the current mileage reading.
💡 Pro Tip: The 7,500 Mile Rule
If your vehicle is newer than 2 years and has less than 7,500 miles, it is considered "New" by California. It MUST be 50-State Certified to be registered. Always check the emission label before buying a low-mileage car from out of state!
