Where to Find Your VIN: The 5 Locations a California Verifier Will Check

When a Licensed Vehicle Verifier shows up to complete your REG 31, they don't just look at one spot. The California DMV requires the verifier to confirm the VIN matches multiple locations on the vehicle — and a smooth appointment depends on each of those locations being readable.
Here's where your VIN lives, and what to look at before we arrive.
1. The Dashboard Plate (Driver's Side, Visible Through the Windshield)
This is the most familiar location. Stand outside the driver's-side windshield and look down at the corner where the dash meets the glass. You'll see a small metal plate stamped with a 17-character VIN (for any vehicle built after 1981).
Federal regulations have required this plate to be visible from outside the vehicle for decades, which is why every car you've ever seen has one in roughly the same place.
Pro tip: If your dashboard plate is dusty, dirty, or has a parking permit stuck over it, clean it off before the verifier arrives. We can't photograph what we can't read.
2. The Driver's-Side Door Jamb Sticker
Open the driver's door and look at the door frame or the door itself. You'll find a federal safety certification sticker that lists the VIN, the manufacture date, gross vehicle weight rating, and tire pressure information.
This sticker exists on every passenger car, light truck, and SUV sold in the United States. If yours is faded, peeling, or has been painted over, that's something to flag in advance — we may need to find a third location to confirm the match.
3. The Engine Bay (Many Vehicles)
Many manufacturers — Ford, GM, Toyota, and others — also place the VIN on a sticker or stamping somewhere in the engine compartment. Common spots include the firewall, the strut tower, or a label on the cowl near the windshield.
Not every vehicle has this. Older imports especially may skip it. But when it's there, it gives us another data point to confirm everything matches.
4. The Frame (Trucks, SUVs, and Older Vehicles)
Pickup trucks and body-on-frame SUVs often have the VIN stamped directly into the frame rail. On a Ford F-150 it's commonly on the right rail above the rear axle. On older Chevys and Toyotas it might be along the driver's-side rail.
If your truck has lived a long life in Folsom, Lincoln, or anywhere with a real winter once or twice, frame stamps can get covered in road grime, undercoating, or rust. A wire brush and a flashlight before the appointment can save us both time.
5. Motorcycles and Trailers (Different Rules)
Two-wheeled and towed vehicles don't follow the same playbook:
- Motorcycles — The VIN is stamped into the steering neck (the frame section just behind the front forks). Some manufacturers also place a sticker on the frame or under the seat.
- Trailers — Look on the tongue, the coupler, or a riveted plate along the frame. Older homemade or unpermitted trailers sometimes have the VIN in less obvious places — flag this when you book.
What If a VIN Location Is Missing or Illegible?
It happens. Insurance work, body damage, repaints, replaced doors, custom builds, classic restorations, neglect — there are a lot of reasons a VIN might be hard to read in one of the locations above.
Here's what you should know:
The travel/time fee for the visit still applies even if the vehicle cannot be verified. The DMV requires the verifier to confirm the VIN is present and matches the paperwork. If we can't, we can't sign off on the REG 31.
The good news: most "missing VIN" situations are actually just dirty VIN situations. A clean dash plate and a flashlight in the door jamb solves 90% of these calls.
