About VIN Verifications
Everything you need to know about the DMV REG 31 process — what it is, who can perform it, and how to get it done without the hassle.
Understanding VIN Verifications
The essentials every vehicle owner should know about the California DMV's verification process.
What is a VIN Verification?
A physical inspection required by the California DMV to confirm the Vehicle Identification Number on your vehicle matches your ownership documents (title or registration). This prevents fraud and is required before the DMV will issue California registration.
Who is Authorized?
The DMV REG 31 form can only be signed by: DMV employees, CHP or Peace Officers, and Licensed Vehicle Verifiers (LVV) like us. We hold an active California license to perform verifications at your home or office.
What We Can Verify
We handle the vast majority of standard registration scenarios for the California DMV.

What We Cannot Verify
Private verifiers are prohibited from verifying:
- Salvaged or Junked Vehicles
- Grey Market (Imported) Vehicles
- Armored Cars
- Motorcycles with engine changes or last registered in California but no longer appear in the CA DMV database
These must be verified by the CHP or DMV directly.
DMV vs. Private Verifier
The DMV performs verifications for free, but you'll need to tow or drive the vehicle there and wait in line. Private Verifiers like us charge a travel fee for the convenience of coming to your location with fast turnaround.

When Do You Need One?
Two of the most common situations where the DMV requires a REG 31 verification.
Out-of-state Vehicles
If you purchased a vehicle from another state or recently moved here with your vehicle, California requires a physical VIN verification before issuing a title.
The Solution
We travel to your location, verify the title or registration document against the VIN plate and factory labels, and complete the REG 31 form on the spot.
"No Record Found" at the DMV?
This happens when registration lapses for several years and the DMV's system drops the active record. To reactivate, they treat it like a brand-new entry.
The Fix
A standard VIN verification (REG 31) restores your vehicle's history. We verify your documents against the physical VIN and submit the form so the DMV can re-enter the record. This does not apply to vehicles that were registered out of state after being registered in California.
